Procedural Hypnosis & Relaxation

While most of our procedures still utilize traditional sedation to provide relaxation during procedures such as Colonoscopy and EGD (Upper Endoscopy), we now offer procedural hypnosis and relaxation.

Central Illinois Endoscopy Center has done research with Dr. Eleanor Laser, clinical psychologist and co-author of Patient Sedation Without Medication. Relaxation refers to focusing on the mind and relaxing the body’s muscles. Hypnosis is similar to relaxation, but mentally takes you to another state (such as floating on a cloud or walking on a warm beach).

You, along with your CIEC physician, may select minimal or no sedation. You will also have an opportunity, if you choose, to listen to a hypnotic CD to reduce fear and anxiety before, during and after the procedure, further enabling you to focus on relaxation.

Patients who opt for hypnosis and relaxation are allowed to drive themselves home after the procedure. Those who have even minimal sedation are required to have a driver responsible for their post-procedure transportation. For more information, please ask your CIEC doctor if he or she thinks you are a good candidate for this option.
